Historical Ecology in Brazil: A Systematic Mapping of Scientific Articles (1998–2021)

Historical Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies long-term relationships between humanity and the environment. There missing synthesis effort to organize present state of scholarship in Brazil. We aimed characterize by whom, when, where, what, how research has been conducted made systematic mapping 118 scientific articles published Portuguese, Spanish, English fit our inclusion criteria. The results showed from 1998 May 2021, 79 different journals. found 264 national international authors (60% men 40%women); 91% all investigations were carried out Amazon Atlantic Forest biomes. are few works about Cerrado, Caatinga, Pampa, none for Pantanal. most mentioned keywords historical ecology, Amazon, forest, archaeology. Twenty-three focused on particular species, primarily plants; 37% used as its central axis research, 63% auxiliary. more than 35 methodological procedures, both social natural sciences. This overview revealed achievements, gaps, opportunities this field.
